'Black Panther' Is First Marvel Oscar Win
'Black Panther' has made history, becoming the first ever movie from Marvel Studios to win an Oscar. The film had a total of seven nominations and has already won in two categories: Best Costume Design (Ruth E. Carter) and Best Production Design (Hannah Beachler, Jay Hart).
"Marvel may have created the first black superhero, but through costume design, we turned him into an African king," Carter said in her acceptance speech. "It’s been my life’s honour to create costumes. Thank you to the Academy, and thank you for honouring African royalty and the empowered way women can look and lead on screen."
Carter is now the first black woman to win the Best Costume Design award.
